Imps aware of Guiseley threat

Imps manager Danny Cowley won’t be under-estimating the threat posed by National League strugglers Guiseley in Saturday’s FA Cup 4th qualifying round clash.

Despite an awful start to the season a resurgent Guiseley have amassed back to back wins over Southport and York and Danny is aware of the implications of under-estimating opposition.

“I’ve been in teams where other clubs haven’t given us the respect we deserves, and it ends one way: with egg on the face. You don’t beat York 6-1 on a Tuesday night without having very good players.”

Both sides are experiencing a good run of form, City coming off the back of two wins and a battling draw at Bromley. Although Guiseley will be more confident than perhaps a couple of weeks ago, league form means nothing.

“I think league form goes out of the window. They will be buoyed by their recent results, so they’ll be confident, but what’s gone before is irrelevant in the FA Cup. The beauty of the competition is you never know what is going to happen.”

A clash with a team in our own division perhaps cuts down on the homework that the manager has to do, but for a workaholic like Danny that isn’t a bonus.

Relishing the opportunity to progress in the FA Cup

“I always quite like drawing teams in other divisions. I enjoy the challenge of finding out about teams from other leagues, finding out about their league. We enjoy that challenge.”

Despite internet rumblings of outings for fringe players such as Alan Power, Danny intimated that City will be going all out for the win and the prospect of a good cup run.

“We desperately want to win. The FA Cup changes peoples lives, you’re never far away from the dream.

“We’ve been working hard this week, a real focus for us trying to find the formula for us at home. I think we’ve found it intermittently but we’re working hard to find the method and consistency in our play.”

The Cowley brothers enjoyed a good FA Cup run a few years ago, playing more competitive matches in the competition than the eventual winners Manchester United. It seems the intention is to ensure that the Imps are in the pot for the first round draw, and if that takes a replay than Danny says that is exactly what the side will do,

In terms of team news City do still look a little light in some areas. Macauley Bonne has gone back to Colchester, and after a good start the youngster didn’t really reach his best with Lincoln.

Bonne: Returned to Colchester

“Macauley did okay, he got the goal at Tranmere and he played a big part in changing the game at Torquay. The collision at Barrow knocked him slightly, it was the first time he’d had a collision like that. I think after that we didn’t really see the best of him.”

Tom Champion is also illegible as part of the loan agreement with Barnet, however the big midfielders absence is probably regarded as good news by a majority of the Imps fans! When quizzed about new players coming in Danny was typically coy about what stages they may be at.

The Imps kick off against Guiseley at3pm on Saturday looking for the sort of result that might bring in some finding to get those deals over the line!
