In the latest of my look at the lesser known names of Lincoln City I’m going all the way back to 1981 to look at a player called David McVay.
McVay appeared on a Facebook quiz I ran as the Deranged Ferret and very few Imps knew who he was. He was a defender from the Nottingham area who spent a majority of his career at Notts County, playing at Meadow lane from 1973.
He arrived at City on a three month trial via a spell at Peterborough. Despite being ever present during his time at the Bank he only managed a handful of appearances before being told he hadn’t earned a contract.
After the game he faired very well. He was a keen writer and he kept a diary during his time at Notts County documenting his struggles as a lower league player. Those diaries were later turned into a book and a player called “Diary of a Football Nobody.”
He eventually drifted into journalism first with his hometown paper the Nottingham Evening Post and latterly the Daily Telegraph.
Unfortunately for Imps fans he’d stopped keeping his diaries by the time he came to Sincil Bank meaning we don’t get a mention in his book!
